2021.09.25 01:58 LorenzoTheAsian Currently in Braces, Experiencing Extreme Anxiety After Tooth Filing / Enameloplasty
On March 30th I got braces again after having them over 17 years ago when I was in high school (currently 34-years-old, male, social drinker maybe just a three or four nights a month at most, non-smoker). I had a permanent retainer on both the top and bottom row of teeth put in but a bottom incisor became loose and I ignored it for close to 7 years while it became more and more painful. After years of not having insurance, I sucked it up and finally went to a dentist who referred me to an orthodontist who said he wanted to take it slow to make sure they didn't stress anything too much. He also noted that he would file my teeth down to make room as they were crowded but the previous ortho pulled them back as best as they could but it would be best to just move them back more as the tops and bottom striking may have been some of the source of my pain. It sounded good and his explanation all made sense and I wanted to get it fixed asap. I did not seek a second opinion. I trust the orthodontist and two months ago at the end of July he filed my bottom incisors down as planned.
But now that the teeth have been filed and there's no going back I just can't get used to my new narrower teeth! I've been trying to give it time for things to get towards their final position. I also just came from an appointment on Wednesday where I didn't think to bring anything up because I just want to trust that all the various people that look at my teeth when I'm in know what they're doing, but I just can't help having anxiety and being self-conscious about my teeth now. I just don't think they look natural and I can't stop thinking about them. Another concern adding to my anxiety is that the top and bottom incisors don't touch at all so biting down on certain foods like noodles just has them slip through rather than actually cutting into them.
I've attached a number of photos, some from the day I had the braces put on and some I took myself today to hopefully show the new teeth shape and how far back my bottom front teeth are. I know the movement of that one tooth doesn't look like much, but it was especially hurting when I would bite into food and the food would get caught behind in the gap between the permanent retainer and the tooth pushing the tooth around even more.
My final appointment in which the braces come off is October 18, but I will call Monday to check on the space between my top and bottom teeth. But until then I just wanted to ask here for a general opinion regarding the work I'm having done and my anxiety over it. I'm trying my best to see the positives and remember the reasons I wanted braces again in the first place, but I'm honestly so deep in my anxiety over this it's making me regretful for getting the work. Am I being an annoying patient for not speaking up sooner? Is my anxiety justified in any way at all or am I completely overthinking the new shape of my teeth? Thanks in advance!

For the last 7 years it's been pretty hellish for me because I've gotten everything I've wanted for absolutely 0 effort. The result is that I have 0 self discipline and self motivation. It's horrible knowing exactly what I want and how to get it, but just being unable to/constantly failing myself. It's always "oh, after this other thing" or "later" etc. And my diet's been pretty bad.
I'm looking for someone to help keep me accountable, and I'll do the same in return. I would prefer if we used some sort of proof system - screenshots or phone photos would work.
Here is a quick list of the things I'm interested in keeping track of for myself
- Studying/working at least a few hours on weekdays
- Better diet
- Basic light workout
- Going to social events regularly (I always come up with excuses not to go)
If this all sounds good to you, hit me up and we can discuss how to proceed! I'd love to help someone else stay on track just as much as I'd like to improve myself.
